OUR STORY
About Robatary
THE IDEA
Two continents.
One grill.
Robatary was built around an idea that shouldn’t work on paper, that the smoky, charcoal-fired flavours of Japan belong at the same table as the spice-forward, soulful cooking of the Americas. Turns out, they do. And they’re brilliant together.
The name comes from the robata, the traditional Japanese grill that uses hardwood charcoal to cook slowly over intense heat. It’s the beating heart of our kitchen and the reason everything that comes off it tastes like nothing else in Wakefield.
THE KITCHEN
What makes our food
taste the way it does.
The robata grill does the heavy lifting. Steaks, salmon, chicken thighs, king prawns, they all hit the charcoal and come off with a crust and a smokiness that a gas grill simply can’t match.
Around it, we run a grill & kitchen that we’re proud of. Gyozas folded by hand. Katsu sauce from scratch. Kimchi we make ourselves. The pancakes that come with the duck are steamed on the pass, not thawed.
None of it’s complicated. All of it takes time.
THE RESTAURANT
Warm. Welcoming.
The restaurant sits on Northgate in the centre of Wakefield, a few minutes’ walk from the Cathedral and Westgate station.
Inside, we’ve built a space that works equally well for a midweek lunch, a Friday night with friends, date night, or a Sunday roast with the family. Dark wood, soft lighting, the scent of charcoal when you walk in. A bar that takes cocktails seriously.
